In most modern cities across the globe, clubs and bars have been labeled differently for gay men and lesbian women. Gay clubs are drinking joints which cater to exclusively gay, lesbian or transgender and bisexual customers. Gay bars once used to serve as the centre of gay culture. They were amongst the few joints with homosexual inclination and gender variant identity could overtly socialize uninterrupted by prying eyes. These establishments were described by other names such as gay club, lesbian bar, dyke bar and queer bar, depending upon the community that they served.
The main purpose of these clubs is to serve alcohol to the clientele, who come there to socialize and relax. Similar to other clubs, the Gay clubs are frequently promoted by furnishing conspicuous flyers in the street at the gay-friendly shops, sites, venues, and at the other associations and proceedings. The gay bars or nightclubs do segregate or discriminate on the basis of sex. There are gay only or lesbian only clubs where people of the opposite gender are not allowed entry.
Music mixed by DJs is a very common feature or characteristic of the various Gay clubs. Jazz, blues, disco, pop, drum and bass, punk, house, trance and techno are the various forms of music that can be heard in these bars. The various famous gay bars found all over the world are Midnight shift in Sydney, The Peel in Melbourne, The Wickham in Brisbane and Connections in Perth are some of the bars found in Australia. Brazil boasts of the off club in Salvador and so does Canada of Woody’s in Toronto. In the United States, reputed gay clubs include the Black Cat Tavern in L.A, The Abbey in California, Paradise Nightclub in New Jersey.
